Dr. Samuel Joe Acquah is currently a full-time lecturer, researcher and academic advisor at University of Environment and Sustainable Development, (UESD), Somanya. Obtained Ph.D. from Jiangsu University (Zhenjiang, China) specializing in Agricultural Engineering with Water-Soil Engineering option. Before the PhD, I obtained a Masters in Soil Science from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). I graduated from University of Cape Coast (UCC) with B.Sc. (Chemistry and Physics), having obtained a Diploma in Laboratory Technology from the same institution. Completed certificate training course on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) for climate resilience.
My teaching focuses on graduate and undergraduate introduction to soil science and soil resources; introduction to environmental microbiology; water use in agriculture; irrigation and drainage; introduction to agricultural water resources management; and energy and water resources. As a multi-disciplinary researcher, I have expertise in soil science and integrated soil fertility management (ISFM), integrated water resources management (IWRM), greenhouse farming technology and agricultural engineering. My research interest focuses on: environmental soil science and environmental quality assessment, greenhouse agriculture and greenhouse microclimate management, agricultural water and soil resources management/ soil erosion and sediment transport, soil management and fertility and sustainable agriculture, climate change impact on hydrology and water resources, climate change, food security, livelihood and adaptation, and environment and natural resources management.
In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Acquah is also a laboratory technologist and consultant/analyst for soil, water, plant materials and fertilizer recommendation. Have supervised, facilitated and coordinated students’ project work in the laboratory at KNUST, UDS,UEW-Mampong, UNER, etc. Have worked with several organizations e.g. DANIDA, IITA, WAAPP, AGRA, ASNAPP, USAID, SAPEC, etc. I am keenly interested in championing improvement in soil governance as a way to safeguard agricultural productivity and food security through sustainable soil management and the resulting ecosystem services and development of the environment. My keen interest is to ultimately support research activities that strengthen the link between academia/science and farmer practices, aiming to educate farmers on soil science principles for practices of sustainable soil management. Experience in advocacy and lobbying on good agriculture practices and governance among urban agriculture stakeholders (Government line Agencies, NGOs, FBOs, Research Institutions and Universities). Over Two Hundred graduate laboratory projects have been completed under my supervision and facilitation in the last ten years.
