Employment History

Mankutam (Tracy Keith Flemming) is a Senior Lecturer (African Studies) at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (Somanya, Eastern Region, Ghana) at the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences in the Department of General Studies. He also serves as the Leader of the Proofreading Unit at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (2022-2023). He holds a Ph.D. in History (2010) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (USA) as well as a Certificate of Completion from the University of Georgia (Athens, Georgia, USA) for the African Civic Engagement Academy (2021) that was supported by the United States Department of State (online). Before joining the academic staff at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, he taught African and African American Studies in the Department of Area and Global Studies at the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Grand Valley State University (Allendale, Michigan, USA) from 2011 to 2021, where he also served as the Coordinator of the African and African American Studies Program from 2020 to 2021.

His research interests include Afrikology, intellectuals, Pan Africanism, nationalism, and Islam in Africa. He is the author of Travel and the Pan African Imagination (Lexington Books: 2021), and his articles and book reviews have appeared in Africology: The Journal of Pan African Studies and the Journal of West African History.

Dr. Mankutam was a member of the editorial board of Africology: The Journal of Pan African Studies from 2008 to 2020, where he served as the Managing Editor from 2016 to 2018 and as the Associate Executive Editor from 2018 to 2020. He has also served as a referee and reviewer for several professional journals including the African Journal of History and Culture, The Journal of American History, Human Affairs: Postdisciplinary Humanities & Social Sciences Quarterly, African Studies Review, and Contemporary Journal of African Studies.

His research interests include Afrikology, intellectuals, Pan-Africanism, nationalism, and Islam in Africa.

He is the author of Travel and the Pan African Imagination (Lexington, Books: 2021), and his articles and book reviews have appeared in Africology: The Journal of Pan African Studies and the Journal of West African History.

Prior to joining UESD, Dr. Mankutam taught African and African American Studies in the Department of Area and Global Studies at the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Grand Valley State University (Allendale, Michigan, USA). He also served as the Coordinator of the African and African American Studies Program at Grand Valley State University.

He served in various capacities at Africology: The Journal of Pan-African Studies as a member of the editorial board, Managing Editor, and Associate Executive Editor.
