The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) proposes an International Guest Lecture Series as a strategic platform to advance its internationalisation agenda through sustained engagement with leading global scholars, practitioners, and policy experts on critical sustainability challenges. The series will focus on four interlinked thematic pillars: Food Security and Sustainable Agri-Food Systems, Responsible and Climate-Smart Mining, Environmental Restoration and Biodiversity Conservation, and Inclusive Sustainable Development.
The initiative is designed to strengthen UESD’s global academic networks, enhance the international exposure of students and faculty, and embed comparative global perspectives into teaching, research, and community engagement. Each lecture will integrate international case studies, policy frameworks, and applied methodologies relevant to Ghana and the wider West African sub-region, fostering dialogue between global best practices and local development priorities.
The series will adopt a hybrid delivery model, combining in-person and virtual sessions to facilitate participation from international partners, development agencies, and industry leaders. Structured components will include keynote lectures, thematic panels, student masterclasses, and policy roundtables aimed at translating knowledge into practice.
Expected outcomes include strengthened international partnerships, joint research and mobility opportunities, enhanced curriculum content aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the development of policy briefs and community outreach initiatives. Through this series, UESD will consolidate its position as a regional hub for sustainability-oriented higher education and global knowledge exchange, contributing meaningfully to national and international development discourse.
To start with, below are 10 strong thematic areas aligned with UESD’s internationalisation agenda, each with a concise scope suitable for a guest lecture series, call for speakers, or programme brochure:
1. Global Food Security and Resilient Agri-Food Systems
Examines global and regional food security challenges, climate impacts on agricultural productivity, and innovations in climate-smart agriculture. Focuses on policy, technology, and community-based approaches that enhance resilience, nutrition, and market access for smallholder farmers in West Africa.
2. Sustainable Land Use, Environmental Restoration, and Biodiversity Recovery
Explores restoration ecology, reforestation, agroforestry, and landscape-level planning strategies for degraded ecosystems. Highlights scientific methods and governance frameworks for restoring biodiversity while sustaining livelihoods and ecosystem services.
3. Responsible Mining, Resource Governance, and Community Development
Addresses environmental and social impacts of mining, regulatory frameworks, and best practices for responsible extraction. Focuses on mine closure, land reclamation, benefit-sharing, and conflict mitigation in resource-dependent communities.
4. Climate Change Adaptation, Mitigation, and Nature-Based Solutions
Covers climate risk assessment, adaptation planning, and nature-based solutions such as wetlands restoration and forest conservation. Links science, policy, and finance to support low-carbon development pathways.
5. Circular Economy and Sustainable Waste Management
Investigates resource efficiency, agro-waste valorisation, recycling systems, and green entrepreneurship. Emphasizes policy instruments and business models that promote circular bioeconomies in emerging economies.
6. Environmental Policy, Governance, and International Frameworks
Reviews global environmental agreements (e.g., SDGs, CBD, Paris Agreement) and their national implementation. Examines institutional coordination, compliance mechanisms, and policy coherence in sustainable development planning.
7. Water, Energy, and Nexus Approaches to Sustainable Development
Focuses on integrated management of water, energy, and food systems. Explores infrastructure planning, renewable energy solutions, and governance models for resource security in climate-vulnerable regions.
8. Urban Sustainability and Green Infrastructure
Addresses sustainable urban planning, climate-resilient cities, and green infrastructure solutions. Examines housing, transport, waste, and ecosystem services in rapidly urbanizing contexts.
9. Inclusive Development, Gender, and Social Equity in Environmental Management
Explores the role of gender, youth, and marginalized groups in environmental governance and livelihood systems. Highlights participatory approaches, social safeguards, and equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms.
10. Innovation, Digital Technologies, and Data for Sustainable Development
Examines the use of GIS, remote sensing, AI, and digital platforms in agriculture, biodiversity monitoring, mining compliance, and environmental policy. Focuses on data-driven decision-making and open science for sustainability.
MODE OF DELIVERY
The Guest Lecture Series will be delivered using a Physical-to-Blended learning model, combining in-person classroom engagement with virtual and asynchronous learning components. The programme will maintain a total of 20 contact hours per thematic module, structured flexibly to suit the selected delivery mode.
Across both modes, teaching will emphasize interactive learning, including case studies, policy dialogues, group projects, and applied problem-solving, supported by digital learning platforms for resource sharing, discussion forums, and post-session engagement.
