Africa’s Organic Revolution Takes Centre Stage at 10th UESD International Virtual Seminar

The 10th (University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) International Virtual Seminar on April, 30, 2025 convened a dynamic assembly of scholars, policymakers, and students to examine transformative strategies for food security and sustainable development in Africa. The highlight of the seminar was a compelling keynote address by Mr. Victor Manfuru, founder of the Zimbabwe Organic and Natural Food Association (ZONFA), titled “Africa’s Organic Revolution: Indigenous Solutions for Food Security and Sustainable Development.”

Mr. Manfuru underscored the importance of Africa’s cultural and agricultural heritage as a wellspring for sustainable practices. He emphasized indigenous approaches such as crop rotation, agroforestry, and the use of native botanicals in livestock care as effective, eco-friendly alternatives to industrial agriculture. “These practices not only enhance soil fertility and biodiversity, but also reduce the dependence on synthetic antibiotics, helping to curb the growing threat of antibiotic resistance,” he stated.

The keynote also explored the deep connection between cultural heritage and ecological stewardship. Mr. Manfuru stressed that traditional knowledge systems, shaped by generations of interaction with local environments, offer critical insights for biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management. However, he cautioned that globalization and climate change pose significant threats to these time-tested practices.

Calling for urgent collaboration, Mr. Manfuru urged policymakers, researchers, and indigenous communities to work together to preserve and integrate traditional knowledge into contemporary development strategies. “By valuing and revitalizing indigenous knowledge, we can foster resilience, promote equity, and ensure sustainable development for future generations,” he concluded.

His address sparked vibrant discussions among participants, particularly around the role of academic institutions in supporting indigenous innovation through research and community partnerships.

The International Seminar reaffirmed UESD’s role as a hub for interdisciplinary dialogue and solutions-driven thinking, advancing the global agenda for sustainability and inclusive development.
