His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to boost infrastructure at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Somanya, to support academic work. He pledged when he visited campus as part of his Eastern Regional tour under the “Resetting Ghana Tour.’
The President was accompanied by Ministers of State, the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, and Members of Parliament from the area. He was received by key members of the University community, including the Chairman of the Governing Council, Hon. Emmanuel Seth Terkper; the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson; the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edward Wiafe Debrah, the Registrar, Mrs Mary Abena Agyepong, members of Management and students.

The President Mahama inspected two major accommodation projects on campus: an 800-bed capacity hostel currently under construction and a 450-bed hostel facility nearing completion.
Addressing members of the University community and guests, President Mahama described UESD as the “home baby” of his administration and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the University’s growth into a model institution that will lead Ghana’s environmental sustainability agenda.

He further announced that he would return in October 2026 to commission the 450-bed hostel facility, which is expected to ease student accommodation pressures. He also expressed confidence that the 800-bed hostel project would be completed and ready for use by February 2027. In his remarks, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Hon. Seth Terkper, expressed appreciation to the President for his continued support and outlined the University’s key needs for the government’s consideration.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, also thanked the President for taking time out of his busy schedule to inspect the projects. He highlighted the importance of the 800-bed hostel facility, which commenced recently, noting that its timely completion would significantly reduce accommodation challenges currently facing the University. He further expressed optimism that the government would continue to support UESD in delivering on its mandate.
