The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Somanya, Eastern Region has officially launched its first-ever Internal Audit Week celebration under the theme, “Elevating Professionalism, Promoting UESD.” The opening ceremony was held at the University’s Multi-Purpose Hall Auditorium and attended by members of management, senior and junior staff.
In her opening address, Director of Internal Audit, Ms. Joyce Anastasia Sam, noted that that May is globally recognized as Internal Audit Awareness Month. As a relatively young institution, UESD is beginning with a week-long celebration, with aspirations to extend it to a month-long observance in subsequent years.
Ms. Sam explained that internal auditing is a vital, independent, and objective assurance and consulting function that enhances organizational value. At UESD, the internal audit function contributes to achieving the University’s strategic goals by evaluating and improving the effectiveness of risk management, internal control, and governance processes.

“The mission of internal auditing globally is to enhance and protect organizational value by providing risk-based and objective assurance, advice, and insight,” Ms. Sam stated. She reiterated that the Directorate of Internal Audit is committed to serving as a catalyst for positive change by offering independent, objective assurance and advisory services. Underscoring the importance of professionalism, Ms. Sam noted that it transcends certification, encompassing continuous learning, integrity, ethical conduct, and dedication to high standards. “We are not police officers or fraud enforcers,” she clarified, addressing common misconceptions. “Internal auditors are partners in progress, not barriers — we provide insight and inspire growth.”

She encouraged members to embody the values and mission of UESD in their roles, noting that professionalism and integrity are crucial to building a lasting institutional legacy. “We have only one UESD — our shared institution and collective responsibility,” she said.
Launching the Internal Audit Week, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, commended the Directorate for spearheading the celebration. He recounted a personal experience with internal auditors early in his tenure, which deepened his respect for the profession. He encouraged UESD staff to embrace and support the Internal Audit Directorate’s work, as it aligns with global best practices and ensures transparency and accountability.
Prof. Nyarko-Sampson emphasised the relevance of the theme, particularly in the context of UESD’s recent external audit covering operations from June 2020 to December 2024. He commended the Directorate for its pivotal role in facilitating a successful audit process and serving as a liaison between the University and external auditors.
“This is a historic milestone for UESD. In under five years, we are formally recognising the vital role of internal auditing,” he said. “Internal auditing is crucial to risk management, governance, and strategic decision-making.”Activities lined up for the week-long programme include:Capacity building on risk management/risk management sensitisation, community engagement and social responsibility and indoor games.
