Vice-Chancellor, Nyarko-Sampson Urges Investment in Holistic Education at UPSHS Golden Jubilee Launch

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, Somanya, Eastern Region, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, has called for renewed commitment to holistic education, strategic investment, and stronger alumni engagement to secure the future of the University Practice Senior High School (UPSHS), Cape-Coast.

Delivering the keynote address at the launch of the school’s Golden Jubilee at Auditorium 900 of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Nyarko-Sampson, himself an old student of UPSHS, described the milestone as a moment of reflection, celebration, and renewed commitment.

The event brought together traditional leaders, education officials, alumni, students, and other stakeholders. The highlight of the launch was the unveiling of the 50th anniversary logo.

Speaking on the theme, “50 Years of Holistic Education: Nurturing Global Citizens,” Prof. Nyarko-Sampso noted that the UPSHS’s 50-year journey represents more than the passage of time, highlighting a legacy built on discipline, perseverance, and the transformative power of education. ‘The story of UPSHS is not simply about buildings and classrooms, but about the countless lives shaped and the society transformed through education,” he stated.

Prof. Nyarko-Sampson traced the origins of UPSHS to a visionary initiative of the Faculty of Education at UCC, established to serve both as a Secondary School and a practical training ground for trainee teachers.
Since its founding in 1976 with just over one 100 students, the school has grown into a respected institution known for academic excellence and discipline.
He emphasised that UPSHS has remained committed to holistic education-developing not only intellectual capacity but also moral integrity, social responsibility, and global awareness.

The Vice-Chancellor paid glowing tribute to generations of teachers whose dedication has sustained the school’s standards, describing them as “the heartbeat” of the institution. He noted that their influence extends far beyond the classroom, shaping the aspirations and character of students.
He also commended the achievements of alumni, who serve as ambassadors of the school’s values.
Referring to his own experience and involvement in alumni work, the Guest Speaker urged members of the University Practice SHS Old Students Association (UPOSA) to deepen their engagement with the school.

Addressing the evolving demands of the 21st century, Prof. Nyarko-Sampson highlighted the need for education systems to adapt to technological advancements, globalization, and emerging global challenges.
He underscored the importance of equipping students with critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, and ethical judgment.

The Vice-Chancellor outllined key priorities for the future development of UPSHS, including investment in science and technology infrastructure, stronger alumni networks, active parental involvement, and increased support from government and institutions.

He also called on the Ghana Education Service, ministries, and corporate bodies to play a more active role in supporting the school, while urging the University of Cape Coast to strengthen its corporate social responsibility towards UPSHS.

Prof. Nyarko-Sampson urged stakeholders to work collectively to ensure that the next 50 years of UPSHS are even more impactful.
The Golden Jubilee launch marks the beginning of a series of activities to commemorate 50 years of UPSHS’s contribution of education in Ghana.
