UESD Commends The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Landmark Computer Lab Donation

A delegation from the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Nyarko-Sampson, has called on the leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at its Africa West Area Headquarters in Accra. The purpose of the visit was to express the University’s profound appreciation for the Church’s donation of a state-of-the-art computer laboratory to UESD in February 2025.

Professor Nyarko-Sampson was accompanied by Head of the Human Resource Division Mrs. Rose Nandara Faanu, Head of the Community Engagements, Projects and Innovations Unit (CEPIU); and Mr. Stephen Kwesi Amakye, a final-year UESD student and a member of the Church.

The Vice-Chancellor described the donation as the largest single support the University has received in its nearly five years of operation, highlighting its positive impact on academic delivery and digital access for students. He also acknowledged Mr. Amakye for his pivotal role in connecting the University with the Church, which led to the generous contribution.

During the meeting, Prof. Nyarko-Sampson encouraged the Church’s leadership to visit the UESD website to learn more about the University’s mission, values, and strategic initiatives. He further announced that UESD will celebrate its fifth anniversary on August 5, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the University’s journey toward educational excellence and environmental sustainability.

On behalf of the Church, the General Authority Seventy and Counselor in the Africa West Area Presidency, Elder Alfred Kyungu, expressed delight in supporting UESD’s educational goals. The meeting also included discussions on potential future collaborations, including a proposal to link both institutions’ websites and explore opportunities for joint publications.

Elder Kyungu extended an invitation to the Vice-Chancellor, members of the University community, and the  public to participate in an open house event from May 1 to 17, 2025, at the Church’s Temple in Accra. The open house offers visitors a unique opportunity to tour the Temple and gain insight into the beliefs and values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The visit underscored the strengthening relationship between UESD and the Church and paved the way for further collaboration in areas of shared interest.

Other Church leaders present included Elder Samuel Annan-Simons, Head of Communications and Publications; Brother Philip Mensah, Head of Temporal Affairs; Brother Jeff from the Legal Office; and Mrs. Marian Esiape, Area Manager for Welfare and Self-Reliance.
