The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Somanya, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, has led a delegation to the Nigeria High Commission in Ghana to explore areas of mutual collaboration.
The visit, which forms part of UESD’s internationalisation agenda, was aimed at creating awareness about the University’s programmes and forging potential partnerships in areas such as student exchange, joint research, internships, and socio-cultural engagements.
The UESD delegation was warmly received by the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner, Ambassador Moses Ifedayo Adeoye and two other senior officials.
In his remarks, Prof. Nyarko-Sampson explained that the University, which celebrates its fifth anniversary in August, is actively seeking international partnerships across the African continent. He noted that UESD currently runs over 27 undergraduate and 3 postgraduate programmes, accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission. The University operates two schools—the School of Sustainable Development (SSD) and the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences (SNES)—with ten departments and a student population of over 1,300.
He emphasised UESD’s mission to contribute to global sustainable development through education and innovation, and expressed the University’s interest in collaborating with Nigeria in areas aligned with both countries’ development goals.
Ambassador Adeoye, in response, lauded Ghana’s reputation for quality education and acknowledged Nigeria’s appreciation for academic opportunities in the country. He stated that the programmes offered by UESD are of great relevance to Nigeria, especially in the context of environmental preservation and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He reaffirmed the High Commission’s willingness to support UESD’s initiatives and highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to sustainability through national efforts such as conferences hosted by its Ministry of Energy. The Acting High Commissioner expressed hope that the visit would mark the beginning of a strong and productive relationship between UESD and the Nigeria High Commission.
To commemorate the occasion, Prof. Nyarko-Sampson presented a copy of the University’s Strategic Plan to Ambassador Adeoye, who in return offered souvenirs to the UESD delegation. Accompanying the Vice-Chancellor were the Registrar, Mrs. Mary Abena Agyepong; Director of Internal Audit, Ms. Joyce Anastasia Sam; Director of the Directorate of Information Technology Systems and Operations (DITSO), Dr. Emmanuel Kitcher; Head of the International Programmes Office (IPO);Ms. Mavis Kissi and other senior members of the University. Two senior officials. At the High Commission were: Mr. Olufemi Olonijolu, Minister Counsellor (Political), and Mrs. Uray Obuah-Nwosa, First Secretary and Head of Chancery.
