Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wiafe Debrah, Calls on UESD Freshers to Embrace Discipline and Academic Integrity as 2025/26 Orientation Ends

The three-day orientation for freshers of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Somanya, Eastern Region for the 2025/26 academic year has ended with a call on students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them while upholding discipline and academic honesty.

Addressing the new students at the Auditorium, Multi-purpose Building, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edward Wiafe Debrah, reminded them that they have joined a community that values knowledge, integrity, innovation, and service to society. He stressed that education at UESD goes beyond the acquisition of a degree, noting that it is about shaping character, nurturing critical thinking, and preparing students to contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development of Ghana, Africa, and the world. Prof. Wiafe Debrah said, admission into UESD marks an important milestone and the beginning of a new chapter in the students’ lives.

The Registrar, Mrs. Mary Abena Agyepong, made a presentation on University administration, academic structures, and regulations. She explained the University’s governance systems, communication channels, student regulations, and available support services, urging students to make good use of them to enhance their campus experience. She encouraged the freshers to strive to be the best versions of themselves, build positive friendships, and use their time wisely, advising that procrastination often leads to wasted years and missed opportunities.

Other presentations were delivered by the Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Unit on academic expectations for a smooth learning experience, and by the Finance Directorate on student fees and payment procedures.

Welcoming the students on behalf of the student body, the SRC President, Mr. Timothy Kidinyun Yimpuri, explained that the SRC as the official mouthpiece of students and assured the freshers of its readiness to serve their interests. He urged them to make the right choices, noting that academic success largely depends on the decisions students make during their stay at the University. Fraternal messages were also delivered by GRASA, JCR, and the Alumni Association.

Present at the programme were the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. (Mrs.) Daniella D. Sedegah; Prof. Gibrilla Abass of the Department of Water Resources and Aquaculture Management; Prof. Richard Amfo-Otu, Head of the Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Unit; Prof. Alexander Nii M. Pappoe, Chairman of the Graduate Programmes Management Committee; as well as other faculty and staff of the University.

Day Two of the orientation featured presentations on campus facilities by the Director of Physical Development and Estate Management, Surv. Isaac Abbam; library services and access to academic resources by Dr. George Clifford Yamson, Senior Assistant Librarian; and the UESD Incubation Hub by its Coordinator, Dr. Kweku Adu, who highlighted the Hub’s role in supporting students to develop innovative solutions to societal challenges.

Officials from the Yilo Krobo District Command of the Ghana Police Service, led by the District Commander, Supt. Kingsley Abrokwa, and supported by ASP Janet Gbetanu (2IC), also educated students on security and safety precautions on and off campus.
