Dr. Nuworza Kugbey is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health Psychology at the Department of Environment and Public Health, University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Somanya, Ghana. From 2021 to 2023, he served as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of General Studies at the same institution.
Dr. Kugbey holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with Linguistics and an MPhil in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ghana, Legon. He further obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Ensign Global University, Kpong, Ghana, and a PhD in Psychology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa.
Before joining UESD, Dr. Kugbey worked as a Clinical Psychologist and Lecturer in the Department of Family and Community Health at the School of Public Health, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho. He initially served as a part-time lecturer in Mental Health at UHAS before transitioning to a full-time role, where he taught and supervised both undergraduate and postgraduate (MPH) students. His teaching portfolio included courses such as Research Methods, Introduction to Psychology, Mental Health as a Public Health Issue, Forensic and Legal Issues in Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Addiction, Psychopathology, and Human Rights and Ethics in Mental Health.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Kugbey practiced as a Clinical Psychologist at the University of Ghana Careers and Counselling Centre for over two years and worked as a Teaching and Research Assistant in the Department of Psychology at the University of Ghana for more than three years. He also served as a part-time Clinical Psychologist at Progressive Life Centre, where he provided psychotherapy and trained Clinical Psychology interns. In addition, he held an adjunct faculty position in Psychology at the Regent University College of Science and Technology, Ghana.
Dr. Kugbey has been actively involved in several collaborative research projects, leading to over 75 publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals and more than 20 presentations at national and international conferences. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Mental Health section of BMC Public Health and reviews manuscripts for several reputable international journals.
In recognition of his contributions to mental health research, Dr. Kugbey was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Advanced Scholarship in 2019 (Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada), with a research focus on maternal mental health.
