A groundbreaking ceremony has been held for the construction of two additional hostels at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Somanya, in the Eastern Region. The project, being undertaken under the GETFund initiative, will provide a combined accommodation capacity of 900 beds and will be constructed at the designated hostel site on the University campus.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. (Mrs) Rita Adjei Awatey, performed the symbolic sod-cutting ceremony. She was joined by the Registrar of the University, Mrs. Mary Abena Agyepong, as well as members of the University’s Management and staff, who witnessed the event.

In an address delivered on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, the Registrar expressed profound appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, the Chairman of Council, Hon. Emmanuel Seth Terkper, and the Eastern Regional Minister for their unwavering support and commitment to the development of the University.

Mrs Agyepong described UESD as a “University of the future”, noting that its mandate reflects a strong commitment to environmental protection and sustainability for posterity. She expressed confidence that the two 450-bed hostels would significantly address the University’s student accommodation challenges.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. (Mrs) Awatey, who was accompanied by dignitaries including the Member of Parliament of Yilo Krobo, Hon. Albert Tetteh Nyakotey, described the occasion as a privilege and a historic milestone for the University. She highlighted the instrumental role played by the Chairman of Council, Hon. Seth Terkper, in securing the hostel project for UESD.

Mrs. Awatey also commended President Mahama for his continuous support and commitment to quality education in Ghana, noting that the groundbreaking ceremony forms part of the President’s promise to deliver on his development agenda for Ghanaians.

She further underscored the critical role of UESD in advancing the sustainable development agenda, particularly at a time when the world is confronted with challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and resource depletion. Adding that, quality education thrives best in a supportive learning environment, and investing in the University’s infrastructure is a necessary and invaluable step.
